Headless e-commerce specialist emporix has won the contract to provide its e-grocery software to UK based Hungrily following a transformation of its business from delivering home-cooked food to local groceries when the Coronavirus crisis hit in March.

Hungrily, which operates in the Andover region of the UK, had to make the rapid switch from home-cooking to online groceries after its existing business model took a back seat following lockdown but it did not have the technology in place to support the switch to e-groceries. Swiss based emporix stepped up to provide the necessary e-commerce software based on its ten years’ experience supporting online grocery service Lieferladen.de in Germany.

Mark Ridgeon, founder and CEO of Hungrily chose emporix over other e-commerce software providers because of its specific e-grocery functionality. He commented: “We had a very short window of opportunity in which to find a technology partner, but we knew that it would need to provide the same levels of functionality as the big supermarkets if we were to compete effectively as a new player in the market.

“Once we have it in place, not only will we be able to focus our efforts on the practical aspects like picking, packing and delivery, but we will be able to give customers the same experience they receive from Ocado such as being able to specify regular lists and preferences, such as how you like your bananas or specific cuts of meat.  We will also be able to let customers pick delivery times and have a choice of payment options. For our local suppliers like specialist butchers and fruit growers we can offer a shop window to make up for their loss of trade as a result of the global pandemic.”

The Hungrily service covers the Hampshire, Berkshire and Surrey areas of the UK but plans to expand with the help of emporix into other areas as it recruits more operatives. The company has already secured new premises in Andover.

Eberhardt Weber, founder and CEO of emporix commented: “We can quickly help start-ups like Hungrily and larger retailers transform their business to the online model because we understand the special needs of the grocery sector and have ten years of experience of working with customers in the European market. This is our second UK customer and we look forward to working with Mark and his team to help him make Hungrily a great success.”
